Cleckheaton area guide

Cleckheaton is fast-emerging as one of the most popular areas in the Kirklees region.

About Cleckheaton

The satellite town has its roots in the mill trade and its historic buildings are increasingly accompanied by new ones, with ongoing multi-million regeneration projects taking shape in the form of brand new commercial, residential, transport and leisure facilities.

There is a huge variety of schooling options available at primary, secondary and sixth form/college level, with Heckmondwike Grammar and Whitcliffe Mount High School notable highlights.

Local amenities

A mixture of independent and high-profile chain stores occupy the busy town centre, which is also home to a number of popular shops, pubs, restaurants and bars including a bistro and gin bar.

Sports facilities, which are located both within and on the outskirts of the town, appear in their droves. They include a running/athletics track; a golf club; cricket club and rugby club; whilst the centrepiece is Spen Valley Leisure Centre, a brand new £15m sports and leisure hub which includes a swimming pool, gym and exercise studios.

Things to do

The town’s multi-cultural make up is evidenced by the many international cuisines and there is no shortage of essential outlets in the form of cafes, bars, pharmacies, salons and banks, whilst King Edward VII Memorial Park is a pleasant green pocket of an otherwise urban town centre.

Transport links

By car, Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield can all be reached in around 20 – 25 minutes and the M62 motorway is conveniently located to reach other major cities in Northern England. The Cleckheaton bus station is situated in the town centre and has a number of bus routes available that serve nearby cities and towns. For domestic and international flights, Leeds Bradford Airport is about a 40 minute drive away and can also be reached by public transport.
