How to get your home ready to sell this spring

You’ve already decided that 2026 is the year you’re making a move, and it’s time to put your home on the market. So what do you need to do to get ready to sell?

Boost your curb appeal 

First impressions are key when you are selling your home, and buyers often decide how they feel about a home within the first few minutes of arriving. 

Some things you can do to easily and quickly improve your curb appeal are: 

Tidying up your front garden by cutting the grass, trimming the hedges, and removing weeds from paths, driveways and flowerbeds. 

• Powerwash the pathways and the driveway. 
• Add spring touches like new plants, hanging baskets or a fresh welcome mat.
• If your front door or other woodwork around your home is faded, touch it up with a new coat of paint.

Declutter and depersonalise 

When a potential buyer comes to view your home, they want to imagine themselves living there. 

If you have lots of personal items and clutter on show, it could be hard for them to visualise, so it’s important to pack away things like family photos, trophies and collections. Also try to make sure countertops in your kitchen and bathroom are free from clutter as much as possible and organise things you’d like to keep in cupboards. 

Sometimes, it can be easier to think of this as pre-packing valuable items and personal decor for your move! 

Deep clean everything 

A sparkling clean house gives the impression that it is well-maintained. 

Focus on areas that you might miss in your regular cleaning routine. Think about paying attention to windows and windowsills, skirting boards, door handles, carpets and flooring, kitchen appliances, bathroom grouting and areas that build limescale. 

Doing the deep clean before you have photos taken of your house will also make your home look more appealing on your agent’s website and portals like Rightmove. 

Make small repairs 

If there are small issues with a home, why wouldn’t there be bigger ones too? This is what potential buyers think when they spot repairs that need to be made in your property. 

Common repairs that you might need to do (and could have forgotten about) include:

• Dripping taps
• Loose door and drawer handles
• Cracked tiles
• Peeling paint on walls or furniture
• Squeaky doors

These are all small repairs which should be easy to fix before you start the process of selling your home, and could make a huge difference to buyer interest.
