Moving out of a property and into a new one is not an easy job. For many, it can bring stress, overwhelm and confusion.

Summer is usually the most popular time for moving in the UK, so whether you’re moving into your first home or fifth, we have some top tips to make your move calmer during the busiest season of the year.

Start early and plan ahead

One of the easiest things to do is to plan ahead. Start planning as soon as you have your move-in date, or if you’d like, a little bit beforehand. Double the time you think you’ll need to get everything done, and significantly reduce any chance of rushing or unpreparedness; it’s likely you’ll be surprised by how much you actually have to do.

It’ll also give you more time to sort out important logistics that’ll relieve stress further down the moving schedule. For example, sorting out a moving company, notifying change of address to bank and utilities, sorting out child or pet care, time off work, saying goodbye to local loved ones and more.

Declutter as you move

Don’t think you have to bring everything you own. Decluttering before and while you’re packing is a great way to calm your mind and lessen the extent of things you have to move. Take time going through your current property and decide whether you need everything. If there’s something you haven’t used in years, perhaps you can sell it, donate it or simply throw it away.

This helps both practically with the moving, but also gives you a positive sense of starting fresh when moving into a new property.

Organise your packing

Good packing techniques will be great for your peace of mind. Start one room at a time, label each box with the room they belong to, and what’s inside the box. Many people also choose to colour code their boxes too for a more visual way of organisation.

Whichever method you choose, unpacking once you’ve moved will be much easier. It’s also worth having a ‘first night’ box for once you’ve moved out that includes essentials such as toiletries, chargers, medications, a kettle, tea or coffee, snacks, toilet paper and a change of clothes. Having these items easily accessible can make your first evening more relaxed and enjoyable, and removes the stress of having to unpack everything straight away to find the few items you really need.

Be easy on yourself

Understand that moving is a stressful and daunting experience. Remember to take breaks, stick to your self-care and wellbeing routines. Have a plan to decide what you’re gonna do day by day, so you can stay on track and not overwhelm yourself with too much work.

Book professional movers

You might want to handle it yourself, but booking professional movers makes for a seamless move once you’ve done the rest of the hard work.

They can pack your items safely, move furniture and leave you to focus on other things and bathe in the excitement of moving to a new home.
